This Project includes the collaboration efforts from: Government – Division of Arts, Culture and Libraries; local Municipality through the Office of the RH Region 6; The South Africa Day organization, Capital City Business Chamber (CCBC) as well as various business partners. The objective and intent of the collaboration is to assist with:
- promotion of community-based projects relating to self-help, empowerment, capacity building and skills development
- provision of training, support, or assistance to emerging micro enterprises to improve capacity to start and manage businesses
- attracting tourism as well as investors/sponsors/donors to Solomon Mahlangu Square and the Mamelodi community
- job creation.
The Solomon Mahlangu Freedom Square Memorial situated at the southern entrance to Mamelodi West, is one of the township heritage programmes initiated after 1994. The square was established and designed to commemorate the struggle for Freedom, massacre of 21 November 1985 and the contribution made by the political activists in Mamelodi. The square was named after Solomon Kalushi Mahlangu as an anchor and struggle icon in Mamelodi and South Africa. His statue is regarded as a central icon and a uniting figure that is used to remember and commemorate the struggle stalwarts in Mamelodi.
The main objective of the Square is to document, display, commemorate, preserve, and educate the community on the history of Mamelodi. It is a cultural centre around which civic life, pride and freedom can manifest in order to better the lives of the residences. It is a much-needed green space for the urban centre of Mamelodi that allows the community to reflect and is also an active urban space that should host different community activities, gatherings, and festivals. Currently the square is not accessible to community and all cultural elements are stolen, electrical installation damaged, water connection disrupted, ablution facilities stripped-off and traders stalls are unserviceable.
